Evaluation of Enterolobium ciclocarpum as dietary alternative to eliminate protozoa from the rumen
[摘要] Eliminationofciliateprotozoafromtherumen(defaunation)improvestheproteintoenergyratiointhenutrientsabsorbedbyincreasingtheamountofbacterialandsometimesdietaryaminoacidsavailableforabsorptionatthesmallintestine.Theincreasedratioofaminoacidstovolatilefattyacidsinthenutrientsabsorbedleadstothebetterperformanceobservedindefaunatedanimals.Therearehowevernocommercialalternativestoobtaindefaunatedruminantsatthefarmlevel.Thepresentpaperdiscussestheeffectofsupplementingsheepwithdifferentlevelsoftreelegumes(Enterolobiumciclocarpum)ontheconcentrationofciliateprotozoaintherumenfluid.TheinclusionofE.ciclocarpumassupplementorbasaldietinthedietofsheep,doesnoteliminateprotozoafromtherumen,butcausesasignificantreductionoftotalprotozoanumbersandavariationinthespeciesofprotozoapresentintherumen.HolotrichsarethemostsusceptiblespeciestoE.ciclocarpum.SupplementationwithE.ciclocarpummaybeanalternativetoincreasetheproteintoenergyratiointhenutrientsabsorbed,byincreasingtheflowofdietaryaminoacidstotheduodenum.Athighlevelsofinclusioninthediet,itmayalsoincreasetheflowofbacterial-Ntothesmallintestineduetothelowernumberofprotozoaintherumen.However,thereductionindrymatterintakemayaffectanimalperformancewhentheproportionofE.ciclocarpuminthedietishigh.
