Value of grass silage, dried pelleted grass and malt distillers' grains as supplements to barley straw
[摘要] Anexperimentwascarriedouttodetermineintakeanddigestibilityincattleoflongbarleystrawsupplementedwithgrasssilage(S),driedpelletedgrass(G),maltdistillers'grains(D)orbarleyandsoyabeanmeal(B).Thesupplementswereofferedattwolevels,low(L)andhigh(H).Thelowlevelwas2.5kgandhighlevel3.25kgDMperanimalperday.EightBritishFriesiansteersinitiallyweighing378kgliveweightwereusedinanincompleteblockdesignderivedfromhalfofan8x8latinsquare.AllsupplementsdepressedstrawintakeandtotaldietDMintakewhencomparedwiththebasaldietinwhichbarleyandsoyabeanmealwereused.Similareffectswerenotedondigestibilityexceptforthesilagesupplementwhichdidnoteffectdigestibility.Themostnoticeabledepressingeffectwaswiththemaltdistiller'ssolubles.Itissuggestedthatthebarley/soyabeanwasmoreeffectivethantheothersupplementsinmaintainingahighprotein:energyratiointhemixtureofnutrientspresentedformetabolism,probablybecausethesoyabeanmealsuppliedmorebypassproteinthantheothersupplements.Thefactthatthedistiller'sgrainshadthemostnegativeeffectbothonintakeanddigestibility(especiallyofthefibre)isprobablybecauseofitshighlipidcontentandtheknownbacteriostaticeffectoffatoncellulolyticmicroorganisms.
