A MINERALOGICAL AND CHEMICAL STUDY OF THE DIKELAND SOILS OF NOVA SCOTIA
[摘要] SixprofilestakenfromthedikelandareasofNovaScotiawereexaminedchemicallyandmineralogically.Themineralogyofthevariouslayerswassimilarwithinandbetweenprofiles,exceptthatthereddishlayerscontainedgoethitewhilethegreylayersdidnot.Thelatterwereverystronglyacidicandhadanunusuallyhighorganicmattercontentduetoburialofundecomposedvegetationbytidalsediments.Whiletheycontainednogoethite,theyhadasignificantamountofquot;freeironquot;.Itisproposedthatwheresufficientorganicmatterwasavailablethegreylayerswereproducedbyanaerobicbacterialreductionofthereddishironoxides.Quartzwasthepredominantnon-claymineralassociatedwithmica,feldsparandchlorite.Theclayfractionconsistedofillitewithcharacteristicsofmuscovite,chloritesimilartoquot;swellingquot;chlorite,kaoliniteandmontmorillonite.
