THE EFFECT OF SOIL AGGREGATE SIZE ON AVAILABILITY OF OXYGEN AND ON GROWTH OF TOMATOES
[摘要] Diffusionofoxygenwasmeasuredbytheplatinummicro-electrodemethodonsevensizesofartificiallypreparedsoilaggregates.Diffusionofoxygenwasdirectlyproportionaltoaggregatesize.Growthoftomatoplantsincreasedwithaggregatesizeandwithdiffusionrateofoxygen.Foratemperatureof68°F.,andwiththesurfaceofthesoilatamoisturetensionof20 cm.,criticaldiffusionratesofoxygenaresuggestedforthe2-,4-and6-inchdepthsof12 × 10−7,8 × 10−7and6 × 10−7grams/cm2/min.,respectively.Athoroughstudyoftheperformanceoftheplatinummicro-electrodemethodunderfieldconditionsisrecommended,withaviewtoadaptingitforthedirectassessmentinthefieldofsoilphysicalconditionandfortheestablishmentofcriticallevelsofoxygenforcrops.
