THE EFFECT OF FERTILIZERS AND OSMOTIC PRESSURE ON GERMINATION
[摘要] Resultsofgerminationstudieswithcanningcorn,fieldbeans,andsugarbeetsatthreesoilmoisturelevelsandunderfivefertilizertreatments,alongwiththeresultsofgerminationofsugarbeetsatiso-osmoticconcentrationsofmannitolandammoniumnitratesolutions,arereported.Themoisturelevelsalonehadnosignificanteffectonthegerminationofanyofthecrops.Moisturelevelsincombinationwithnitrogenfertilizersreducedgermination,andthereductionbecameprogressivelypronouncedwithdecreasingmoisture.NitrogencausedagreaterreductionthanmannitolorP2O5.Withonlyone-quarteroftheavailablemoistureinthesoil,thenitrogentreatmentsresultedinvirtuallynogerminationofanyofthethreecrops.Thereweresignificantdifferencesinresponsepatternamongspecies,withcanningcornbeingtheleastsensitiveandfieldbeansshowingthegreatestreductionduetofertilizerdamage.Resultsindicatethatnofertilizershouldbeplacedincontactwithbeanseeds.Thehighly...
