A MINERALOGICAL STUDY OF SOME CORE SAMPLES FROM THE BEARPAW FORMATION
[摘要] AmineralogicalstudywasmadeofsomedrillcoresofBearpawshalesfromthesiteoftheproposedpowerandirrigationdamontheSouthSaskatchewanRiver.Mechanically,thesamplesfellintothreedistinctgroups,viz.,Group1:lowsand,highsilt,andhighclay;Group2:highsand,moderatesilt,andhighclay;Group3:highsand,lowsilt,andveryhighclay.AsamplewhichshowedlessershearstrengthwhencomparedwiththeothersfellintoGroup3whichdiffered,mineralogically,fromtheothergroupsbythepresenceofbiotiteinthesandandmoreilliteinthesiltandclayfractions.Otherwiseallsampleswerequitesimilarinmineralcomposition,withmontmorillonitethepredominantclaymineral.ThesourceofsomeofthesoilsofSouthernSaskatchewanandSouthernAlbertahasgenerallybeenattributedtotheBearpawformation.Thisviewissupportedbythepresentstudy.
