Peltiera (Fabaceae), the coming and going of an “extinct” genus in Madagascar

[摘要] PeltieraDuPuyamp;LabatisaMalagasygenusoftwodescribedspeciesthoughtprobablytobeextinctatthetimeofitspublicationin1997,whenitwasknownonlyfromatotalofthreepre-1950collections.However,recentfieldworkineast-centralMadagascarhasresultedinthediscoveryofstillextantpopulations,andthereforeitisnowpossibletoreconsiderthephylogeneticpositionandstatusofthegenusanditstwospecies.Phylogeneticanalysesbasedonmolecular(chloroplasttrnKandnuclearribosomalITSsequences)andmorphologicaldatacorroboratethecloserelationshipbetweenPeltieraandOrmocarpopsisR.Vig.,agenusofsixspecies,alsoendemictoMadagascar.PeltieradiffersfromOrmocarpopsismainlybyhavingarticulated,dehiscentfruits,andthetwogeneratogetherare,inturn,sistertothewidespreadbutmainlyAfricanOrmocarpumP.Beauv.Morphological,distributionalandhabitatdatagatheredfromthenewcollectionsshowthatonlyasinglespeciesofPeltieracanberecognized,andasthisspeciessharesimportantsynapomorphieswithallspeciesofOrmocarpopsis,itistransferredtothisgenusasO.nitida,comb.nov.AdistributionmapandphotographsofO.nitidacomb.nov.arepresented,andaconservationthreatanalysisofthespeciesisprovided.ThenameOrmocarpopsisislectotypifiedandanamendeddescriptionofthegenuswithitsnewcircumscriptionisgiven.
