Cell size, nucleic acids, and synthetic efficiency in the wild type and a growth mutant of the multicellular alga Ulva mutabilis Føyn
[摘要] AtagivenlightintensitythewildtypeofthegreenmulticellularalgaUlvamutabilisFøyngrowsataslowerratethanthemutantSlender.ThemutantcontainsthesameoraslightlygreateramountofchlorophyllandRNAperunitDNAthanthewildtype,butmuchlessproteinandcellwall.Themutantandthewildtypeseemtoabsorbthesamepercentageoftheincidentlight,andthereseemstobenodifferenceintheefficiencywithwhichtheabsorbedenergyisutilized.TheamountofproteinandcellwallsynthesizedperunitDNA(≈percell)perdayisthesameinthemutantandthewildtype.Thefactthatthegenerationtimeofthemutantisshorterthanthegenerationtimeofthewildtypethusexplainsthedifferenceincellsize.TheamountofproteinsynthesizedperunittotalRNAperdayappearstobelessinthefast-growingmutantthanintheslow-growingwildtype.Thedatashowthattheproliferationrateofacellpopulationmayincreasewithoutacorrespondingincreaseintheamountorefficiencyofthemachineryresponsibleforincreaseofmass,andsupporttheideathattheSlendermutationmightbeinageneconcernedwiththecontroloftheprocessesthatprepareacellfordivision.
