[摘要] Theeffectsofthe-SH-containing,stronglyreducingsubstance,β-mercaptoethanol,havebeencomparedwiththoseofitsoxidizedcounterpart,dithiodiglycol.Ithasbeenfoundthatbothinhibitmorphogeneticmovements,especiallytheclosureoftheneuralplate.However,theneuralplatesformedinthepresenceofthetwosubstanceshaveverydifferentshapes;furthermore,dithiodiglycolhasmoregeneraltoxicity,butlesseffectonmitoticactivity,thanmercaptoethanol.Thelatterdoesnotreducetheinducingactivityoftheorganizer,butitstronglyinhibitsthecompetenceoftheneuroblast.Thesignificanceoftheseresultsisdiscussed.
