A study of the synthesis of naphthaquinone pigments by the larvae of two species of sea urchins and their reciprocal hybrids☆
[摘要] ThesynthesisofnaphthaquinonepigmentsbythelarvaeofS.purpuratus(PP),S.dröbachiensis(DD)andtheirreciprocalhybrids(PDandDP)hasbeeninvestigated.ThepluteiofPPcontaintwopigments,designatedAandB,verysimilartothetwopigmentsofpurpuratusadulturchins,havingabsorptionspectrainetherwithmaximaat338mμand463mμforA,and349mμand473mμforB.ThepluteiofDDcontaintwopigmentsdesignatedXandY,completelydifferentfromtheadultdröbachiensispigments.Xhasanabsorptionspectrumwithmaximaat245mμ,280mμ,and414mμ;andYonewithmaximaat270mμ,320mμ,and422mμ.Themaximainthevisiblepartofthespectrumareatwavelengths40–50mμshorterthanthoseoftheadultpigments.ItissuggestedthatXandYarepurelylarvalpigments,constitutingthetemporaryendproductsofabiosyntheticchainthatwilllaterdeveloptheremainingenzymesrequiredtosynthesizetheadultpigments.Thetwohybridshaveidenticalpigments.BothPDandDPcontainasmajorconstituentsthetwopigmentsAandBofPP,andinadditionalesseramountofpigmentCandtracesofpigmentD,neitherofwhichoccursineitherparentaltype.TheyhavenoXorY.Possibleexplanationsfortheapparentdominanceofthepurpuratuspatternofpigmentsynthesis,andforthepresenceofCandDinthehybridshavebeenpresented.Theresultsshowthatthenatureofthecytoplasmhasnoapparenteffectuponthekindsofpigmentssynthesizedbythehybrid.Ithasalsobeenfoundthatithasnoeffectontherateofsynthesisofpigment,whichwasthesameforthetwohybrids.
