Morphology and proliferation during early feather development☆
[摘要] Thefirstbackfeathersofchickenembryosappearinregionswhereadensedermisispresent.Theearliestrecognizablestageoftheindividualfeatherinvolvesaclusterofelongatedepidermalcellswhichformslightlybeforeorcoincidentwithanearlydermalcondensation.Thymidine-H3incorporationandmitosisarevirtuallyabsentfromthecondensationsandoverlyingepidermisforaperiodofabout24hoursafterformation.DNAsynthesisandmitosiscommenceagaininbothtissuesasfeatheroutgrowthbegins.Quantitativestudiesofdermalcelldensity,andresultsoflabelingwiththymidine-H3,suggestthatthecondensationsariseasaresultofdifferentialmitoticactivitybeneaththeepidermalfeatherplacodes.Cellsinthecondensationssubsequentlyremainnearthetipofthedermalcore,whilecellsoriginallyattheedgeofthecondensation,orinthesurroundingdermis,makeamajorcontributionofdaughtercellstothebasalandlateralpartsofthedermalcore.Recombinationexperimentsindicatethatbothdermisandepidermisofskinseparatedatthenonproliferativephaseoffeatherdevelopmenthavethecapacitytoformfeathersinvitrowhencombinedwithmoreprimitivebacktissues.Theseandotherobservationsarediscussedinrelationtotheconceptofinductioninthefeather.
