Control of differentiation in aggregates of embryonic skin cells: Suppression of feather morphogenesis by cells from other tissues☆
[摘要] Aggregatesofdissociatedskincellsfrom8-daychickembryosgraftedtothechorioallantoicmembranereconstructedtypicalintegumentaltissueswithfeathersthatdevelopedtoadvancedstages.Similarly,aggregatesofdissociatedmouseskincellsfrom15-dayembryosgraftedtothechorioallantoisgaverisetoskin,hairfollicles,andsebaceousglandsprimordia.Acompletesuppressionoffeatherformationwasobtainedconsistentlywhenthedissociatedchickskincellswerecommingledandcoaggregatedwithmouseskincellspriortografting;hairformationwasnotmarkedlysuppressedinsuchcompositeaggregates.Asimilarlycompleteandconsistentsuppressionoffeathermorphogenesiswasobtainedincoaggregatesofskincellswithcellsfromseveralothertissuesofchickembryos,aswellasofmouseembryos.Someaspectsofthecausalityoffeathersuppressioninaggregateswereexamined:(1)interspersionofskincellsandsuppressorcellswasessentialfortheeffect,undertheconditionsemployed;(2)byvaryingtherelativeconcentrationofsuppressorcellsitwasfoundthataminorityofsuppressorcellscausedacompletesuppressionoffeatherdevelopment;inthecasesexamined,onlywhentheproportionofsuppressorcellstoskincellswasreducedto1:24didfeathersdevelop.Additionalchangestookplaceinthedevelopmentalpatternofskincellscoaggregatedwithcellsfromothertissuesandwererelatedtothekindofadmixedcells.
