[摘要] Thenumberofnongonadalnucleiinthefree-livingsoilnematodeCaenorhabditiselegansincreasesfromabout550inthenewlyhatchedlarvatoabout810inthematurehermaphroditeandtoabout970inthematuremale.Thepatternofcelldivisionswhichleadstothisincreaseisessentiallyinvariantamongindividuals;rigidlydeterminedcelllineagesgenerateafixednumberofprogenycellsofstrictlyspecifiedfates.Theselineagesrangeinlengthfromonetoeightsequentialdivisionsandleadtosignificantdevelopmentalchangesintheneuronal,muscular,hypodermal,anddigestivesystems.Frequently,severalblastcellsfollowthesameasymmetricprogramofdivisions;lineallyequivalentprogenyofsuchcellsgenerallydifferentiateintofunctionallyequivalentcells.Wehavedeterminedthesecelllineagesbydirectobservationofthedivisions,migrations,anddeathsofindividualcellsinlivingnematodes.Manyofthecelllineagesareinvolvedinsexualmaturation.Athatching,thehermaphroditeandmalearealmostidenticalmorphologically;bytheadultstage,grossanatomicaldifferencesareobvious.Someofthesesexualdifferencesarisefromblastcellswhosedivisionpatternsareinitiallyidenticalinthemaleandinthehermaphroditebutlaterdiverge.Inthehermaphrodite,thesecellsproducestructuresusedinegg-layingandmating,whereas,inthemale,theyproducemorphologicallydifferentstructureswhichfunctionbeforeandduringcopulation.Inaddition,developmentofthemaleinvolvesanumberoflineagesderivedfromcellswhichdonotdivideinthehermaphrodite.Similarpostembryonicdevelopmentaleventsoccurinothernematodespecies.
