Larval saliva in Drosophila melanogaster: Production, composition, and relationship to chromosome puffs☆
[摘要] Drosophilamelanogastersalivaryglandsproduceamucoprotein-containingsalivainthethirdlarvalinstar.Atthetimeofprepupaformation,theproteincomponentofthesalivaismorethan30%ofthetotalglandprotein.Electrophoresisofreducedandalkylatedsalivaproteinsinacrylamidegelsyieldsfoursaliva-specificfractions.Twoproteinfractionscontainstronglylinkedsugar.ThemolecularweightsoftheproteinswereascertainedinSDS-acrylamidegels.Molecularweightsfortwosugar-freefractionswerefoundtobe12×103and23×103and,foronefractioncontaininglittlesugar,itprobablyliesbelow100×103.Thevariabilityofsalivaproteinsin67wildtypesofD.melanogasterwereinvestigated.Withthehelpoftransplantationexperiments,itwasshownthatthesalivaryglandssynthesizesalivaautonomously.Salivaproteinscouldbeelectrophoreticallydemonstratedearliestinthesalivaryglandsof86-to88-hr-oldlarvae.Aftersalivaisdischargedfromtheglandlumenatthebeginningofprepupaformation,theglandsproduceanothertypeofsalivaduringtheentireprepupalstageandalsosecreteitintotheglandlumen.Thechromosomepuffsinsection3CoftheXchromosomeandinsection68Cinthethirdchromosomeshowabehaviorthatispositivelycorrelatedwithlarvalsalivasynthesis.
