[摘要] Thestage-specificembryonicantigen(SSEA-1),presentonembryonalcarcinomacellsandonmurinepreimplantationembryos,isdefinedbyamonoclonalantibody.TheantigenicdeterminantofSSEA-1isacarbohydratestructurallyrelatedtothehumanbloodgroupantigenI.SinceithasbeensuggestedthattheIantigenmightrepresentaprecursororSSEA-1,weusedantibodiestoSSEA-1andtoItoanalyzetheirexpressiononmousepreimplantationembryos.Bothareexpressedonmouseembryos;moreover,IisexpressedonearlierembryosthanSSEA-1.TheIantigenisdefinedbyitsexpressiononhumanerythrocytes;accordingly,weexaminedexpressionofIandSSEA-1onhumanperipheralbloodelements.WefindSSEA-1tobeexpressedexclusivelyonhumangranulocyteswhileIisfoundonlyonerythrocytes.Theseresultssuggestthatthesecloselyrelatedantigenscanbeindependentlyexpressed.AnalysisoftheexpressionofIandSSEA-1wasthenextendedtoaseriesofmouseandhumancelllines;someexpressboth,someexpressonlyone,andsomeexpressneitheroftheseantigens.Theactivationofspecificglycosyltransferasesand/orglycosidasesduringdevelopmentanddifferentiationappearstobethebiochemicalmechanismregulatingexpressionoftheseantigens.
