Development of the dendritic branching pattern of the Medial Giant Interneuron in the grasshopper embryo☆
[摘要] Theembryonicdevelopmentofthegrasshopper'sMedialGiantInterneuron(MGI)wasexaminedbyinjectingthecellwiththefluorescentdyeLuciferYellowataseriesofstagesinitsgrowth.Particularattentionwasgiventothewayinwhichthisneuronconstructsitsstereotypeddendriticbranchingpattern.TheMGI'sdendritesoriginateassecondaryprocesseswhichsproutatcharacteristicpointsalongtheneuriteaftertheprimarygrowthconehaspassed.Theseprocessesthenarborizetoformaminiatureversionoftheiradultbranchingpatternbeforetheendofembryoniclife.Whilegrowing,thedendriticbranchesarecoveredwitharadiantprofusionoffilopodia;however,thesefilopodiaareephemeralstructuresanddisappearoncethecellmatures.Bycontrastthereisnosignificantreductionineitherthenumberorthespatialextentoftheactualdendritesatanyembryonicstage.ThisimpliesthatthestereotypedbranchingpatternofthematureMGIisprimarilydeterminedbyaprecisepatternofinitialgrowth,andthatsecondarypruningofbranchesdoesnotplayanimportantroleinshapingthefinalformofthiscell.Thecoordinateingrowthofthefirstcercalsensoryaxonswasexaminedbycobaltfillingtheembryonicnerve,andthemeansbywhichthesesensoryaxonsmaketheirinitialcontactswiththeMGI'sdendritesishereindiscussed.Thefollowingpaperconsidersthedegreetowhichthissensoryinnervationregulatesdendriticgrowthandbranching.
