Avian scale development: VIII. Relationships between morphogenetic and biosynthetic differentiation☆
[摘要] Epidermal-dermaltissueinteractionsduringdevelopmentcontrolnotonlythemorphogenesisofskinderivatives,butalsothesynthesisoftheα-andβ-keratins,whicharetheproductsofdistinctstructuralgenes.Theelectrophoreticpatternsofthes-carboxymethyl(SCM)derivativesofthekeratinsproducedbyeitherembryonicorhatchedchickepidermisfromnormaloverlappingscales(scutateandscutellatescales),theradiallysymmetricalscales(reticulatescales),andthegeneralbodyintegumenthavebeencomparedwiththepatternsfromcorrespondingregionsofbirdshomozygousforthegene,scaleless(scsc).Wefindsixpolypeptidesinthemolecularweightrangeofα-keratin,threeβ-keratins,andonemajorpolypeptideofanintermediatemolecularweight;anyofwhichmayormaynotbepresentinagiventissue.Ourcomparisonsshow(1)thatforsomeregionsoftheintegumentthereareinconsistenciesbetweenthedataobtainedfromourelectrophoreticstudiesandthoseobtainedfromfinestructuralandX-raydiffractionstudies(i.e.,someregionswhicharefinestructurallydistinctgiveidenticalSDS-PAGEpatterns);(2)thatthebiosyntheticdifferentiationoftheoverlappingscalesisdependentuponspecificmorphogeneticevents,whilethebiosyntheticdifferentiationofthereticulatescalesisnot;and(3)thatthereisregion-specificgeneexpressionfortheepidermalkeratinsofallscaledregionswhencomparedwiththekeratinsofallnonscaledregionsoftheintegument.
