The structure of 180° supernumerary limbs and a hypothesis of their formation
[摘要] Theresultsofadetailedanalysisof100supernumerarylimbsgeneratedby180°ipsilateralrotation(onthesamelimbstump)ofregenerationblastemasispresented.Thelimbswereanalyzedintermsoftheirpositionoforigin,frequency,cartilagestructurebyVictoriabluestaining,andmusclestructurebyserialsections.Single,double,ortriplesupernumerariescanbeproducedatnouniquepositionoforigin,althoughtheposterodorsalquadrantwaspreferred.Fourclassesofsupernumerarylimbsweregeneratedbysuchoperations—normal;doubledorsalordoubleventral;partnormal/partmirrorimaged;partnormal/partinvertedinapproximatelyequalfrequencies.Afteramputationofthesesupernumerariesthesamemusclepatternsarefaithfullyregenerated.Ahypothesistoexplaintheproductionoftheseabnormallimbsisproposedbasedontheobservedphenomenonoffusionofsupernumeraryblastemata,buttheirregenerativebehaviourpresentsproblemsforcurrentmodelsofpatternformation.Similarresultshavebeenobtainedwithdevelopinglimbbudsandtherelationbetweendevelopmentandregenerationisdiscussed.
