Determination of polarity and bilateral asymmetry in palleal and vascular buds of the ascidian Botryllus schlosseri☆
[摘要] ReversalofthebilateralasymmetryofthezooidswasinducedinaseriesofcoloniesofBotryllusschlosseri.Pallealbudsfromcolonieswithnormalorreversedbilateralasymmetrywereisolatedintheearlystagesfromtheparentalzooidsandculturedinthevascularizedtunicofthesamecolonyorofanothercolonywithoppositeasymmetry.Vascularbuddingwasinducedincolonieswitheithertypeofasymmetry.Thebudpolaritywasshowntodependonthevascularization;thetestvesselenteringtheisolatedpallealbudalwayscausestheentrancepointtobecometheposteriorendofthedevelopingzooid.Onthecontrary,thebilateralasymmetrictypeispredeterminedinthebudprimordium;theisolatedpallealbudsdevelopthetypeofasymmetryoftheirparents,evenwhengraftedinthetestofacolonywithoppositeasymmetry.Sincethesamewasalsotrueofthevascularbuds,itisconcludedthattheinformationforthekindofbilateralasymmetrytobedevelopedisconveyedbytheepidermalenvelopeofthebud.Theepidermisoftheparentalzooidsinfluencesthepallealbuds,whereasthewallofthetestvessels,epidermalextrusionsofthezooids,influencesthevascularbuds.
