Differentiation of lens in cultures of neural retinal cells of chick embryos

[摘要] Whendissociatedcellsofneuralretinaeof8-day-oldchickembryoswerecultured,monolayersheetsofepithelialcellswereobtained.Thesecellsproliferatedactively.Afterabout30daysofculture,bothlentoidbodiesandpigmentcellsweredifferentiatedinallplates.Inthesecondandthethirdgenerationcultures,bothdifferentiationswerealsoobserved.Lentoidbodiesshowedpositiveimmunofluorescenceforfluorescein-isothiocyanate-conjugatedantiserumagainstδ-crystallin.Molecularconstituentsoflentoidbodieswereverysimilartothoseoflensesdevelopinginsitu,asrevealedbyimmunodiffusiontests.Severallinesofevidenceforthe“neuralretinal”originoflentoidbodies,asopposedtotheirbeingderivedfromlenscellsinadvertentlyincludedintheoriginalcultureinoculaaregiven.Someimplicationsofthepresentresultsfortheproblemof“determination”arediscussed.
