Mating type and the differentiated state in Physarum polycephalum☆
[摘要] Intheacellularslimemold,Physarumpolycephalum,thedifferentiationofamoebaeintoplasmodiaiscontrolledbyamatingtypelocus,mt.Amoebaecarryingheterothallicallelesusuallydonotdifferentiatewithinclones;plasmodiaformwhentwoamoebaecarryingdifferentallelesfuseandundergokaryogamy.Inthispaper,weshowthatamoebaeheterozygousforheterothallicallelescanbeisolatedandmaintainedasamoebae;theamoebaeformplasmodiaincloneswithoutachangeinploidy.Plasmodiawerealsofoundtobeformed,infrequently,byheterothallicamoebaeofasinglematingtype.Theplasmodiaarehealthyandarealsoformedwithoutachangeinploidy.Thus,thepresenceoftwodifferentheterothallicmatingtypegenesinasinglenucleusiscompatiblewiththeamoebalstateandoneheterothallicmatingtypegeneiscompatiblewiththeplasmodialstate,onceestablished.
