[摘要] ThesurfacesheathsurroundingpseudoplasmodiaofDictyosteliumdiscoideumhasbeenpreservedwithatechniqueemployingrutheniumred,andtheappearanceandspatialdistributionofthismaterialdeterminedbyelectronmicroscopy.Thesheathhasathicknessof∼100Ã…overtheanteriorofallpseudoplasmodia,andincreasesuniformlyatarateofanadditional30Ã…witheach100μmtowardstheposterior,thisgradientbeingirrespectiveofpseudoplasmodialsizeorrateofmigration.Thenatureandsizevarianceofthisgradientarediscussedinrelationshiptothenatureofsheathsynthesis,controlofpolarity,itseffectsontherateanddirectionofpolarisedlocomotion,anditspossibleimplicationinpatternformation.
