Establishment of the scleral cartilage in the chick☆
[摘要] Thisstudywasundertakentoinvestigatetheestablishmentofthescleralcartilageinthechickembryo.Johnstonetal.(1974)hasdemonstratedthatmostofthecellsofthescleralcartilageoriginateinthecranialneuralcrest.Bymeansofaseriesofchorioallantoicgraftsofpigmentedretina,anditsadherentperiocularmesenchymefromstage11to25,thepresentexperimentsshowthatthecranialneuralcrestcellsarriveattheeyeinsufficientnumberstoformcartilagebystage14.Pigmentedretina,denudedofmesenchyme,fromstage16embryosimplantedintotheheadofstage13embryosinducescartilageformationinheadmesenchyme.However,neitherpigmentedretinanorspinalcordcouldinducecartilageformationinchorioallantoicmesenchyme.Combinationgraftsofcranialneuralcrestandpresumptiveopticvesicledevelopedneuraltissue,pigmentedretina,andinsomecasessclera-likecartilage.Thus,periorbitalmesenchyme,derivedlargelyfromcranialneuralcrest,ataboutstage14developsthescleralcartilageinresponsetoinductionbythepigmentedretina.
