[摘要] Anantiserumthatspecificallyrecognizesalung-specificantigenpresentinthegreatalveolarcellintheadultmouselungwasusedinimmunofluorescencestudiestodetectthefirstappearanceofthisantigenintheembryo.CellularfluorescencewasfoundtooccurinthelungtissuefromaboutDay14.2onwardandtobeduetothepresenceofthelung-specificorarelatedantigen.Thesimultaneousappearanceofthisantigen(ca.Day14.2)andthecuboidaltypeofepithelialcellinwhichitoccurs(ca.Day14)meansthatthegreatalveolarcell—oritsprecursor—isfirstdetectablearoundDay14.2.Sincethegreatalveolarcell—oritsprecursor—isthefirstandonlytypeofalveolarepithelialcelltooccurintheembryoniclung,itmustbethestemcellfromwhichthesmallalveolarcellderives.Thepersistentsharpdemarcationbetweentheprospectivealveolarandbronchialepitheliaindicatesthattherespiratoryandtheconductingportionsofthelungoriginatefromdifferentpartsofthetubularsystemintheprenatallung.
