A male-specific lethal mutation in Drosophila melanogaster that transforms sex☆
[摘要] Sex-lethal,male-specificallele#1(SxlM#1,1–19.2)isadominant,X-linkedmutationthatislethaltomales.Ithasnoeffectinfemalesotherthantorescuethemfromtheotherwiselethalmaternaleffectoftheautosomalmutation,daughterless.FromastudyoftheeffectsofSxlM#1onthedevelopmentofsexuallymosaicflies(gynandromorphs),itwasobservedthatthislethalmutationcancausegeneticallymale(haplo-X)tissuetodifferentiateasifitwerefemale.Withrespecttoitseffectonsexualdifferentiation,themutationtransformer(tra,3–45)isepistatictoSxlM#1,thoughthelethaleffectsofSxlM#1arenotmodifiedbytra.Inadditiontoitseffectonsexualdifferentiation,SxlM#1reducesthesizeofhaplo-Ximaginaldiscandhistoblastderivativesingeneralinacellautonomousfashion.TheviabilityofgynandromorphswithSxlM#1tissueisverylow,andthesurvivingmosaicshaverelativelylittlehaplo-Xtissue,suggestingthatthereisnosinglelocalized“lethalfocusâ€forthismutation.TherelationshipbetweenSxlanddaughterlessisdiscussed,aswellasthepossibleinvolvementoftheSxllocusinX-chromosomedosagecompensation.
