[摘要] Uptakeandincorporationofaminoacidsduringthefirstcleavageofdevelopingseaurchinsdecreasedataboutthetimeofmetaphase.Thepatternofapparentratechangesisnotcoupledtokaryokinesisortocytokinesis.Itappearsnottorepresentafluctuationinthetruerateofproteinsynthesis,butonlyatransientvariationinpermeabilityduringthecellcycle.ThemetaphasedepressioninuptakeandincorporationobservedinseaurchinembryosisthusquitedifferentfromthemetaphasearrestofproteinsynthesisinHeLacells.Controloftranslationbyfactorsreleasedfromnucleiatmetaphase(ashasbeenproposedforthecellsinculture)thusdoesnotoperateinthecleavingembryos.
