[摘要] EggsandembryosoftheseaurchinLytechinuspictuswerelabeledwith[35S]methionine.Aqueousextractsofproteinwerepreparedandanalyzedbyahighresolutiontwo-dimensionalpolyacrylamidegelelectrophoresissystemdescribedrecentlybyO'Farrellutilizingisoelectricfocusingandsodiumdodecylsulfateelectrophoresis.Outofabout400distinctlyresolvednewlysynthesizedproteins,allbutafewdetectableinthezygotewerebeingsynthesizedintheegg.Thus,theactivationoftranslationofstoredmaternalmessengerRNAfollowingfertilizationisduetoaquantitativeratherthanqualitativechangeinthepopulationofmessengerRNAavailablefortranslation.Thepatternsofproteinsynthesischangeonlyslightlyduringcleavage,butmajordifferencesappearbythebeginningofgastrulation.
