Peridermal cell patterning in the feather-forming skin of the chick embryo☆
[摘要] Theshape,distribution,andorientationofperidermalcellswereexaminedinthedorsolumbarskinof712-daychickembryos.Mostfeatherrudimentsofmiddorsalandlateralrowsshowedamarkedcephalocaudalpolarity.Asimilarpolaritywasfoundintheprospectiverudimentsofskinareaslateraltothelast-formedrow.Onthecranialslopeandapexofrudiments,cellsareconvexandpredominantlyelongatedatrightangleswithrespecttothecephalocaudalaxis,whereasonthecaudalslope,mostcellsareflat,polygonal,surroundedbyaborder-lineridge,andorientedpredominantlywiththeirlongaxisparalleltothecephalocaudalaxis.Thesignificanceofthispatternisdiscussedinviewofthefactthattheepidermisisthedeterminanttissueinfeatherorientation.
