Developmental compartmentalization in the dorsal mesothoracic disc of Drosophila☆
[摘要] Theclonalanalysisofthedevelopmentofthedorsalmesothoracic(wing)discshowsthatclonesinitiatedafteragiventimedonotcrossovercertaindemarcationlinesintheadultcuticle.ThepropertyofM+M+(non-Minute)recombinantcellstoovergrowtheMM+backgroundcellswasusedtodemonstratetheestablishmentofclonalrestrictionsduringdevelopment.IthasbeenshownthatM+M+clonesinitiatedatagiventimeofdevelopmentsharecommondemarcationlinesthatdelimitwhatwecall“adevelopmentalcompartment.”Asdevelopmenttimeandcellproliferationoftheanlageproceed,largecompartmentsbecomesplitintopairsofsmallerones.Astudyofthenumberofcellsinagivencompartmentatthetimeofitssplittingintosubcompartmentsindicatesthatthe“developmentalsegregation”takesplaceingroupsofneighboringcellsandsuggeststhatthenumberofsegregatedcellsisdifferentandcharacteristicforeachcompartment.Withinagivencompartment,asinglecloneofM+M+cellsgivesriseto60–90%ofthetotalnumberofadultcells.Thisphenomenonisreminiscentoftheregulativepropertiesofthemorphogeneticfields,andtherelationofthesetodevelopmentalcompartmentsisdiscussed.Sincehomoeoticmutantstransformentiredevelopmentalcompartmentsintooneanother,thehypothesisisadvancedthathomoeoticgenescontrolcompartmentdevelopment.
