The life cycle of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans: I. Wild-type growth and reproduction☆
[摘要] ThegrowthandreproductionofthesmallnematodeCaenorhabditiseleganshasbeenstudiedusinganelectronicnematodecounterrecentlydevelopedinourlaboratory.At20°C,theusualgrowthtemperature,sizeincreasesinasmoothsigmoidalmannerwithtime,lineargrowthbeingmostrapidaroundthetimeofthefourthmoltandnearlyceasingbytheendoftheperiodofegg-laying.Growthofpopulationsishighlysynchronous;thesmallresidualsizeheterogeneityismaximalataboutthetimeofmaximalgrowth.Thefourmoltsdonotinvolvemajorinterruptionofgrowth,buttheydoentailslightshapechanges(elongatinguponescapefromtheoldcuticle).Egg-layingbeginsshortlyafterthefourthmolt,theraterisingrapidlyatfirst,thenmoregraduallytoapeakfollowedbyarelativelyrapidfall.Comparablemeasurementsat16and25°Cestablishthattheseareacceptablelimittemperaturesforworkwithtemperature-sensitivemutants,althougheggyieldissomewhatreducedandthekineticsofegg-layingarealteredat25°C.Developmentalchronologiesforallthreetemperaturesarepresented.
