[摘要] Theantennaofthemoth,Manducasexta,comprisestwosmallbasalsegmentsandalong(2cm)flagellum,whichisdividedintonearly80annuli.Theannulibearcuticularscalesandsmallsensoryorgans,sensilla.Atrachea,abloodvessel,andtwonervetrunksrunthroughthelumenoftheantennaandintothehead.Sensillaarearrangedinanorderlypatternthatisrepeatedoneachflagellarannulus.Eachflagellumbearsabout105sensilla,whichcontainabout2.5×105primarysensoryneurons.Clumpsofundifferentiatedcells(imaginaldisks),presentinthelarva,formpupalantennaeduringthelarval-pupalmolt.Duringthesubsequentmetamorphicdevelopmentoftheadult,celldivisions,changesincellshape,andcellulardifferentiationtransformpupalintoadultantennae.Sensillaandscalesariseanddifferentiateintheantennaduringmetamorphosis;regionsinwhichsensillaandscaleswillarisecanberecognizedbeforeovertdifferentiationoccurs.Alloftheflagellarannulidevelopsynchronously.Thedenseinnervationandneuronalsimplicityofantennalflagella,aswellastheirsynchronousdevelopmentatalateandaccessiblestageintheanimal'slifecycle,suitthemforstudiesofneuronaldifferentiation.
