The effects of altering the position of cleavage planes on the process of localization of developmental potential in ctenophores☆
[摘要] Duringthetransitionfromthefour-totheeight-cellstageinctenophoreembryos,eachblastomereproducesonedaughtercellwiththepotentialtoformcombplateciliaandonedaughtercellthatdoesnothavethispotential.Ifthesecondcleavageinatwo-cellembryoisblocked,atthenextcleavagetheseembryosfrequentlyformfourblastomereswhichhavetheconfigurationoftheblastomeresinanormaleight-cellembryo.Atthisdivisionthereisalsoasegregationofcombplate-formingpotential.Bycompressingatwo-cellembryoinaplaneperpendiculartothefirstplaneofcleavageitispossibletoproduceafour-cellblastomereconfigurationthatisidenticaltothatproducedfollowingtheinhibitionofthesecondcleavage.However,underthesecircumstancesthesegregationofcombplatepotentialdoesnotoccur.Theseresultssuggestthattheappropriateplaneofcleavagemusttakeplaceforagivencleavagecycle,inorderforlocalizationsofdevelopmentalpotentialtobeproperlypositionedwithinblastomeres.
