Regeneration of a tonic avian muscle: Transformation to a twitch morphology☆
[摘要] Thetonicanteriorlatissimusdorsimuscleofthepigeonwasexcised,mincedintofinepieces,replacedintoitsoriginalbed,andallowedtoregenerateforperiodsupto37weeks.Althoughregenerationwasasynchronous,regenerationpatternsofthemusclefiberssuggestedthefollowingsequenceoffiberdevelopment:undifferentiatedtotonictotwitch.FibertypeswereidentifiedonthebasisofZ-linemorphologyandqualitativedevelopmentandorganizationofthesarcotubularsystemasdemonstratedbyelectronmicroscopy.Histochemicaldemonstrationofmyofibrillaradenosinetriphosphataseandsuccinicdehydrogenaseactivitiescorroboratedthemorphologicalevidence,suggestingatransformationtoatwitchmorphology.Inadditiontothetransformationtothetwitchmorphology,otheralterationswereobservedintheseregeneratingfibers.Amongthesewerelargenumbersofclosely-packed60-nm-diametertubules,thoughttobederivedfromthesarcoplasmicreticulum;mitochondriawithintermembraneousdensematerial;andZ-linestreaming.Thetransformationofthemusclefibersfromtonictotwitchmorphologyisdiscussedintermsofalterationsinnerveimpulseactivitytotheregeneratingmuscle.
