Cell determination in Drosophila with paradoxical genotypes☆
[摘要] AparadoxicalgenotypeforDrosophilamelanogasterisconstructedbycombiningtwohomeoticmutations,whichcausecontradictorytransformationsofthefirstabdominalsegmenttometathoraxandsecondabdominalsegment.Theresultingconflictingeneticinstructionsisresolvedbytheindividualcellswhichnormallygiverisetothefirstabdominalsegment.Eachcellelectstofollowonlyonesetofinstructionsanddeterminestoeithermetathoraxorsecondabdominalsegment.Thechoicebetweenpathwayscanbecharacterizedbythe“determinationequilibrium,â€whichisameasureoftheprobabilitythatnocellinapresumptivefirstabdominalhistoblastdeterminestosecondabdominalsegment.Thedeterminationequilibriumallowsaquantitativeassessmentofgenotypicandphysiologicalfactorswhichcaninfluencetheprobabilityofadeterminativedecision.Theseresultsarediscussedfromthepointofviewoftheabstractnatureofdeterminativedecisionsandfromthepointofviewofthemechanismsinvolved.
