Secondary lens formation caused by implantation of pituitary into the eyes of the newt, Notophthalmus☆
[摘要] Wholepituitaryglands,aswellasequivalent-sizedpiecesofkidney,liver,andadrenaltissue,wereimplantedintotheanteriorchamberoftheadultnewteye.Secondarylensformationwaspresentin16outof17casesofthepituitaryimplantationexperimentsinwhichthepituitarytissueswereexposedtotheanteriorchamberfluid.Inonlyonecaseoutof23,didanotherimplantedtissue(liver)stimulatedsecondarylensformation.Theextentofsecondarylensformationwascorrelatedwiththeposition(closeness)oftheimplantinrelationshiptothedorsaliris.Inallcasesofsecondarylensformationfromthedorsalirisstimulatedbytissueimplants,thepolarityofthedevelopinglenswasreversedsothatthepoleofthefiberaxiswasdirectedtowardtheimplantratherthantheretina.Itappearsthattheectopicpituitaryproducesadiffusiblesubstancecapableofinitiatinglensformationfromthedorsalmarginoftheirisandcapableofdeterminingtheorientationofthefiberaxispoleofthedevelopinglens.
