The effect of embryo extract on the types of collagen synthesized by cultured chick chondrocytes☆

[摘要] Growthofembryonicchickchondrocytesindialyzedembryoextractresultsinbothachangeinmorphologyofthecellstowardthatofafibroblastandachangeinthetypeofcollagensynthesizedfromthecartilage-specificTypeIIcollagen(chaincomposition[α1(II)]3)toamixtureofTypeIcollagen(chaincomposition[α1(I)]2α2)andtheTypeItrimer(chaincomposition[α1(I)]3).Analysesafter6daysofgrowthinembryoextractshowthatthesynthesisofonlyTypeIcollagenandtheTypeItrimercanbedetected.However,onsubculturingthecellstoalowdensityandallowingaperiodofgrowthwithoutembryoextract,coloniesofchondrocytesreappearandthesynthesisofTypeIIcollagenapparentlyresumes.Itissuggestedthattheobservedchangesrepresenta“modulation”incellbehavior,thisbeingexpressednotonlybythemorphologicalchangesbutalsobychangesincell-specificproteinsynthesisasdemonstratedbythechangesinthetypeofcollagensynthesized.
