Differentiation of insect sensory neurons in the absence of their normal synaptic targets☆
[摘要] Sensoryneuronsintheantennaofthemoth,Manducasexta,ariseanddifferentiateduringthe18daysofmetamorphosisfrompupatoadult,sendingaxonstothebrain.Toassessthetrophicdependenceofdevelopingantennalneuronsontheirtargets,westudiedantennaefromsurgicallydebrainedanimals.Ifthebrainisremoved1to45hrafterpupalecdysis(beforeandduringtheperiodwhenantennalneuronsarisebycelldivisions),adultdevelopmentcanbetriggeredbyinjectionofβ-ecdysone;ifthebrainisremoved50to60hrafterpupalecdysis(beforeantennalaxonscontactthebrain),metamorphosisproceedsspontaneously.Neuronsproliferatenormallyanddifferentiateextensivelyintheantennaeofdebrainedanimals.Theyacquireacharacteristicsizeandshape,elaborateaxonsanddendrites,migratetoappropriatepositionsinthesensilla,accumulatecomponentsofaneurotransmittersystem(acetylcholine,cholineacetyltransferase,andacetylcholinesterase),andgenerateelectricalresponsestoolfactoryandmechanicalstimuli.Antennalsensoryneuronsthusdifferfromavarietyofvertebrateneurons,whichfailtomaturewhendeprivedoftheirsynaptictargets.
