The influence of epithelia on cartilage and loose connective tissue formation by limb mesenchyme cultures☆
[摘要] Inordertoexplaintheobservationthatnormallynonchondrogeniclimbmesenchymeformsextensivecartilageinculture,thepossibilitythatlimbectoderminhibitschondrogenesisisexamined.Smallpiecesofquailorchickectodermaregraftedontomicromassculturesofwingmesenchymefromstage23–34chickembryos.Thepresenceofnonridgewingorseveralotherepitheliaresultsinincreasedcollagenaccumulationintheunderlyingmesenchyme,adelayincelldifferentiation,andtheeventualformationoflooseconnectivetissue,asdeterminedbytransmissionelectronmicroscopy.TheinfluencecanoccuracrossNucleporefiltershaving0.1-μm-diameterporesandultrathinMilliporefilters,butnotacrossMilliporefiltersofstandardthickness.Theinfluenceisnotcontactdependentsincecellprocessesdonotcrossthesefilters.Theapicalectodermalridgehastheadditionaleffectofstimulatingmesenchymaloutgrowth.Theseresultssupporttheideathattheectodermplaysadirectbutnegativeroleintheformationofachondrogeniccorewithinthedevelopinglimb.
