Retinal ganglion cell death and regeneration of abnormal retinotectal projections after removal of a segment of optic nerve in Xenopus tadpoles☆
[摘要] TotallyorpartiallydisorganizedvisuotectalprojectionshavebeenreportedtodevelopfollowingsurgicalmanipulationsinembryonicandlarvalAnura.Hereitisshownthattheseareassociatedwithathinopticnervearisingfromaretinalganglioncelllayercontaining20–30%ofnormalcellnumbers,andenteringthebrainbytheoculomotornerveroot.Suchabnormalpatternsofnervegrowthhavebeenfoundtoresultwhenasegmentofopticnerveisremoved.Itissuggestedthattheabnormalityrepresentsaprocessofretinalganglioncelldeathratherthanamisprogrammingofganglioncellspecificitiesaswaspreviouslyhypothesized.
