Critical periods in the development of the Caenorhabditis elegans dauer larva☆
[摘要] ThedauerlarvaofCaenorhabditiselegansisadevelopmentallyarrestedstageformedatthesecondmoltunderconditionsofstarvationorovercrowding.Itisspecializedforlong-termsurvivalanddispersal.Dauer-constitutive(daf)mutantsformdauerlarvaeeveninanenvironmentfavorableforgrowth.Temperature-sensitive(ts)mutantsrepresentingsixdifferentgeneshavebeensubjectedtotemperature-shiftand-pulseexperimentsinordertodefinethetimesoftemperaturesensitivity(TSPs).Theresultsforfiveofthemutants,includingonemutantwithamaternaleffect,showTSPswhichbracketthefirstmolt.Theexceptionalmutant,daf-14,hasitsTSPwithinthefirstlarvalstage.TheTSPsoftwomutants,daf-8anddaf-14,exhibitdistinctmajorandminorphases.Temperature-pulseexperimentsdiscriminatebetweenalternateinterpretationsofthetemperature-shiftdata.Alltheresultscanbeinterpretedonthebasisofnormalanddefectiveexecutionstagesforthetsfunctionsatpermissiveandrestrictivetemperatures.
