Regeneration of the segment boundary in Oncopeltus
[摘要] ThesegmentboundaryofOncopeltusisacompartmentborder.Itisalsoanelementinthepatternoftheabdomen,beingmarkedbyagrooveinthesurfaceofthecuticleandanabruptchangeinthepigmentationofthecells.Ifthesegmentboundaryiseitherburntorextirpated,thesurvivingcellsofthetwoneighbouringsegmentsmigrateintothewoundedareaandformanewsegmentboundarywheretheyconfronteachother.Graftingexperimentswithgeneticallymarkedcellsdemonstratethataboundaryisregeneratedwherevercellsfromremotelocationsintheanteroposterioraxisofanysegmentareapposed;thusanteriorandposteriorcellsfromthesamesegmentformanectopicboundarywhenbroughttogether,whilecellsfromequivalentpositionsintwosegmentshealtogetherwithoutformingaboundary.Weconsiderthesegmentboundarytobeanelementinapatternwhichreiteratesdownthelongitudinalaxisofthebody—whenevercellsfromdifferentpositionsinthispatternarebroughttogetherintercalationoccurs.Theintercalationcaneitherbewithinasegment(noboundaryforms)orbetweensegments(aboundaryforms).Therouteofintercalationappearstobetheshortestavailable,sothatwhentheapposedcellsaremorethanhalfasegmentlengthapartanewboundaryforms.
