Two distinct adhesion mechanisms in embryonic neural retina cells: III. Functional specificity☆
[摘要] Chickneuralretinacellspossesstwodistinctadhesionmechanisms—oneCa2+dependent(CD),theotherCa2+independent(CI)—whoseactivitiescanberegulatedbymanipulationofthetrypsinandCa2+concentrationsusedinthedissociationprocedure.Wehavetestedtheabilityofcellsexpressingeither,both,orneitherofthesemechanismstocross-adhere.Cellspossessingonlyoneofthetwoadhesionmechanismsdonotadheretocellspossessingonlytheother.Cellspossessingbothmechanismsadhereequallywelltocellspossessingoneortheothermechanism,butdisplaystrikingadhesivespecificitywheneithermechanismisselectivelyblocked.Theseresultsdemonstrate(1)themolecularspecificityoftheCIandCDmechanismsand(2)thecellularadhesiveselectivitypossiblethroughtheirdifferentialexpression.Wesuggestthatchangesinextracellularproteaseand/orCa2+concentrationsmightacttomodulatecellaffinitiesbothtemporallyandspatiallywithintheembryoandtherebyinfluencethecourseofcellmovementsandthetopographicpatternsofcellassociation.
