Jelly coat and induction of the acrosome reaction in echinoid sperm☆
[摘要] Inapreviousstudyweestablishedthatspermfromfourspeciesofechinoidsdifferintheirspecificityforinductionoftheacrosomereactionbyheterotypicjellycoatandwepresentedevidencethattherewereonlysmallcompositionaldifferencesintheactivecomponentofthejellycoat,apolysaccharidecomposedoffucosesulfateunits.InthecurrentreportwepresentadditionalstudiesrelatedtothespeciesspecificityofjellycoatwithrespecttoCa2+uptake(orexchange),whichoccursconcomitantlywiththeacrosomereaction,andactivationofphospholipaseactivity,whichappearstooccursubsequenttotheacrosomereaction.Thespecificityofjellycoatininducingtheseprocessesisthesameasthatpreviouslyobservedininductionoftheacrosomereaction.Bindingofjellycoattospermhasbeendemonstrated,andhasbeenshowntobespeciesspecific.Thisfindingraisesthepossibilitythatareceptorforjellycoatexistsonthesurfaceofthesperm.Finally,basedonchemicalandphysical-chemicalstudies,evidenceispresentedthatestablishesthat,despitecompositionalsimilarities,thefucosesulfatepolysaccharidesfromthefourspeciesofeggsdifferinstructure.
