Sorting out of coaggregated brain cell types mediated by specific cell recognition factors in vitro: I. Experimental histogenesis and quantitative analysis☆
[摘要] Tworegion-specificcellrecognitionfactors(CRF,cerebrumspecific,andOTF,optictectumspecific),whichmarkedlyincreasedthesizeofaggregatesformedbydissociatedcellsofhomologoustype,havealsobeenshowntopromoteselectiveassociationofhomologouscellswithincoaggregatesformedfromcommingledcerebrumandtectumcellsuspensions.Theresultingpatternsofcellsortingwereexaminedquantitatively.Nearest-neighboranalysisofcellassociationswithinequatorialhistologicalsectionsofthesecoaggregatesevaluatedtheenhancedassociationofregionallyhomologousbraincelltypesinresponsetoeachspecificbraincellrecognitionfactor.Thestatisticalanalysisalsoexaminedacharacteristicpositionalsegregationofcerebrumandtectumcellsinthesortedoutcoaggregates:tectumcellstendedtosegregatetowardtheperipheryofthecoaggregatewhilecerebrumcellsmassedinthecore.Thesedatademonstratethatthecellsofeachpopulationassociatedpreferentiallywithoneanotherindirectresponsetotheirhomologouscellrecognitionfactor.Theapplicationofthisquantitativenearest-neighboranalysisformakingassessmentsofassociativeaffinitiesbetweenneuralcellpopulationsisevaluatedandimplicationsofusingthisanalysisforstudyingregionalandfunctionalhomologybetweennervecellsduringdevelopmentarediscussed.
