Cell death during development of the topographical distributions of cutaneous sensory neurons in amphibian ganglia☆

[摘要] Duringdevelopmentofthetopographicaldistributionofcutaneoussensoryneuronsinamphibianganglia,neuronsinnervatingbackskinareeliminatedfromtheventralhalfoftheganglia(M.R.BennettandK.Lai,1981,Develop.Biol.,86,212–223).Thepossibilitythattheemergenceofthematuretopographicaldistributionisduetocelldeathhasbeentested.Neuronswithaxonsinthedorsalcutaneousnerveatstage14havebeenlabeledwithhorseradishperoxidase(HRP),andthetadpolesallowedtosurvivetillstage22,whenthedistributionofHRP-labeledcellswasdetermined.Labeledcellsdiedthroughouttheganglia,butinmuchgreaternumbersinventralthandorsalganglia;thiscelldeathwassufficienttoaccountfortheeliminationofventralcellswithdorsalprojectionsdescribedinBennettandLai(1981).Theprojectionsofsensoryneuronsmaybespecifiedaccordingtotheirpositionintheganglion;thosewithaxonsintheincorrectramusmaythenbeeliminatedbycelldeath.
