Quantitative comparison of the mitochondrial populations in the livers of newborn and weanling rats
[摘要] Mitochondriainsectionsofliversamplesfromnewbornandweanlingratswereanalyzedbyquantitativeelectronmicroscopy.Specificactivitiesofthemitochondrialenzymes,NADH-cytochromecreductase,succinate-cytochromecreductaseandcytochromeoxidase,weredeterminedinsimilarsamples.Intheliverparenchymalcelloftheweanling,comparedtothatofthenewborn,thenumberofmitochondriaperunitvolumeofcytoplasmwas2.6timeslarger,whilethevolumeoftheaveragemitochondrionwas0.58timessmaller,resultinginanetincreaseof1.4intherelativesizeofthemitochondrialcompartment.Thedecreaseinvolumeoftheaveragemitochondrionwastheresultofadecreaseinthenumberoflargemitochondriaandanincreaseinthenumberofsmallmitochondria.Thesedataindicateamitochondrialbiogenesisinratliverduringpostnataldevelopment,themagnitudeofwhichexceedstheoverallgrowthoftheorganparenchymaduringthisperiod.Theincreaseinthesizeofthemitochondrialcompartmentwasparalleledbyincreasesof18–21timesinthespecificactivitiesofthemitochondrialenzymes.
