Observations on the deposition, structure, and cytochemistry of the jelly envelopes of the egg of the newt, Triturus viridescens☆

[摘要] Theresultsofastudyofthedeposition,structure,andcytochemistryofthejellyenvelopesoftheoocyteofTriturusviridescensarepresented.Fivelayersofjellyaredepositedabouttheeggasittraversestheoviduct.Theselayers,designatedJ1throughJ5,frominnermosttooutermost,aresecretedbyoviducalregionsAthroughE,respectively,anddifferclearlyintheirmorphologyandresponsetocytochemicaltests.Alllayers,withthepossibleexceptionoflayerJ5,containpolysaccharide.LayersJ1,J2,andJ4containacidmucopolysaccharide,andpossiblyneutralmucopolysaccharideaswell.LayersJ2andJ5maycontainsialicacid.LayerJ3probablycontainsneutralmucopolysaccharide.OnlylayersJ2andJ5appeardefinitelytocontainprotein,butthepossibilitythattheremaininglayerscontainproteinisnotexcluded.Certainaspectsofthepossiblesignificanceofthejellyenvelopesarediscussed.
