Temporal factors affecting localization of neural crest cells in the chicken embryo☆
[摘要] Totestthehypothesisthatpredeterminedcellsmigratefromthecrestinaspecificorder—thefirsttoleavelocalizingdistallyasentericpigmentcellsorsympatheticelements—tritiatedthymidine-labeledneuralcrestfromwhichmanycellshadalreadyemigratedwasgraftedintoanunlabeled,younghostenvironment.Radioautographsrevealedthatthecellswhichremainedinthecrestatthetimeofgraftingwerecapableofgivingrisetothefullrangeofdistalandproximalcrestderivatives.Thishypothesiswasthereforediscarded.Thealternatives(1)thatpredeterminedcellsleavethecrestinrandomorderandlocalizespecifically,or(2)thatpluripotentcellsrespondtochangesintheenvironmentthroughwhichtheymovecouldbedistinguishedwiththeconversesetofgraftingoperations.Whennewlycondensedneuralcrestwasgraftedintoprogressivelyolderhosts,distalmigrationoflabeledcellswasprogressivelyattenuated.Thissuggeststhat,atleastinpart,achangingembryonicenvironmentaffectstheextentofmigrationofneuralcrestcells.Itisproposedthattheultimateexpressionofadevelopmentaltraitbypluripotentcrestcellsmightberelatedsimplytothedegreeofdispersionofthesecellswithinotherembryonictissues,andthisinturn,isprobablyeffectedbytheextrinsiclimitationofcrestcellmigration,andspecificdevelopmentalalterationsincellularadhesiveproperties.
