An analysis of the response of salamander gills to changes in the oxygen concentration of the medium☆

[摘要] Theeffectonthegillsofexposingsalamanderlarvaetoaseriesofmediaofspecifiedoxygenconcentrationwasstudied.Itwasdemonstratedthatthegillsofanimalsmaintainedinwaterhavingalowconcentrationofoxygenbecameverymuchenlarged,whereasthoseofanimalsexposedtoamediumofhighoxygenconcentrationbecamereduced.Detailedcountsandmeasurementsofthecellsofthegillfilamentsindicatedthatthesechangeswereduemainlytochangesintheshapeofthecells,althoughdifferencesinthenumberofcellswerealsoobserved.Itwasdemonstratedthatthevolumeofbloodinthefilamentsincreasedwhentheconcentrationofoxygeninthemediumwasreduced.Thesuggestionwasmadethattheprimaryeffectoftheoxygenconcentrationofthemediumwasonthebloodpressureandthatthechangesintheshapeofthecellswereasecondaryresult.Itwasshownthatthemitoticactivityofthegillswasenhancedbyreducedoxygenconcentration.Depressionofmitosis,however,didnotnecessarilyfollowexposuretoamediumrichinoxygen.Itwassuggestedthatthetoxiceffectofahighoxygenmediumresultedinnecrosisthatinturnsetregenerativeprocessesinmotionthatstimulatedmitoticactivity.
