Acid mucopolysaccharide metabolism, the cell surface, and primary mesenchyme cell activity in the sea urchin embryo☆
[摘要] Therelationshipbetween35SO4incorporationintoacidmucopolysaccharidesandtheappearanceandactivityoftheprimarymesenchymecellshasbeenstudiedintheseaurchin,Lytechinuspictus.Theratiooftheuptakeof35SO4toitsincorporationintocetylpyridiniumchlorideprecipitablematerialvariesoverawiderangeduringearlydevelopment,withthesmallestratio,thereforethegreatestsulfationactivity,beingfoundattheearlymesenchymeblastulastage.Thetypesofmucopolysaccharidesproducedhavenotbeenidentified,butareheterogeneous.Atthemesenchymeblastulastagenearly90%ofthepolysaccharidesproducedbecomesulfated.Whenembryosdevelopinsulfate-freeseawatertothemesenchymeblastulastagethereisa70%decreaseintheincorporationof3H-acetateintopolysaccharidesanda13-folddecreaseintheratioofsulfatedtononsulfatedpolysaccharidesproduced.Embryosraisedinsulfate-freeseawaterdevelopnormallytothemesenchymeblastulastageatwhichtimethereisanaccumulationintheblastocoelofprimarymesenchymecellsthatdonotmigrate.Thesurfaceoftheprimarymesenchymecellsofsulfate-deficientembryoshasasmoothappearanceinthescanningelectronmicroscope,whilethesurfaceofthesecellsincontrolembryosisrough,possiblyreflectingthepresenceofanextracellularcoat.Itissuggestedthatthereisacorrelationbetweensulfatedpolysaccharidesynthesis,cellsurfacemorphologyandcellmovement.
